In-Home Training

Some behaviors are best addressed where they actually happen — at home. Our In-Home Dog Training program brings a certified trainer from The Service Dog Team Academy directly to your door, so we can work on your dog’s specific challenges in the environment where they live. No distractions from an unfamiliar training facility. No behaviors that only show up at home but disappear the moment you walk into a class. Just focused, personalized training where it counts.

Every session is hands-on — we train you alongside your dog, so you leave each visit with practical techniques and a clear homework plan to keep the progress going between sessions.

How It Works

Every in-home session starts with an assessment of your dog’s current behavior and your goals. From there, we build a training plan tailored to your dog — not a generic curriculum. Each visit, we work through the plan together, and before we leave, we give you specific homework to practice before the next session. Progress happens between sessions, not just during them, so we make sure you know exactly what to do and how to do it.

In-Home Training uses the same positive reinforcement methods as all of our programs — no punishment, no corrections, no aversive tools. Our trainers are certified through the Karen Pryor Academy and are members of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

If your dog’s needs go beyond what in-home sessions can address, we’ll be straightforward with you about it. Some dogs make faster, more lasting progress with our Board & Train program, and we’ll recommend it if we think it’s a better fit.

In-Home Dog Training FAQs

How is in-home training different from group classes?

In-home training is one-on-one — just you, your dog, and your trainer. The focus is entirely on your dog’s specific issues in the environment where they actually live. Group classes are better for socialization and real-world distraction work once a dog has some foundational skills. Many clients do both: in-home first to address specific issues, then group classes to build on that foundation.

How many sessions will my dog need?

It depends on what you’re working on. A single focused issue — like jumping or counter surfing — can often show significant improvement in 3 sessions with consistent practice at home. More complex behavioral issues or multiple challenges typically benefit from 5 or more sessions. We’ll give you an honest assessment after the first visit.

Do you serve my area?

We serve clients throughout the greater DFW area from our base in Rockwall, TX — including Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Garland, Mesquite, Wylie, Sachse, and surrounding communities. Contact us to confirm availability in your specific area.

What if my dog’s behavior is only a problem at home?

That’s exactly when in-home training makes the most sense. Many dogs behave perfectly in a neutral environment but act out at home around familiar triggers — other pets, the front door, the dinner table, their crate. Training in the environment where the behavior happens is the most direct way to address it.

Will the whole family need to be involved?

Ideally, yes — at least the people who interact with your dog most often. Training works best when everyone in the household is on the same page with commands, boundaries, and reinforcement. We’ll walk everyone through what we’re working on and how to reinforce it consistently.

What if my dog is aggressive?

In-home training can be appropriate for dogs with mild to moderate aggression, depending on the type and severity. We assess each dog individually. For dogs with significant aggression toward people or other animals, we may recommend our Board & Train program instead, where we can work with the dog in a more controlled, intensive setting. Contact us to discuss your dog’s specific behavior before booking.

Do you use punishment or corrections?

No. We use positive reinforcement exclusively across all of our programs. Our trainers are certified through the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA CTP) and follow the science-backed methods endorsed by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. No prong collars, no shock collars, no corrections.

Can in-home training lead into the service dog program?

Yes. If you’re considering service dog training for your dog, in-home sessions can help build the foundational obedience skills needed before starting the program — particularly if your dog isn’t quite ready for Board & Train. We’ll let you know where your dog stands and what the clearest path forward looks like.

How do I book an in-home training session?
