Dog Training That Fits McKinney Life

From the Square to Your Backyard

Real-World Training for Real McKinney Life

The Service Dog Team Academy is based in Rockwall, about 45 minutes from McKinney via US-380. We work with McKinney families across every program we offer — from puppy training for the wave of new families in developments like Stonebridge Ranch and Craig Ranch, through full service dog training for handlers who want to enjoy McKinney’s walkable, dog-friendly downtown Square with confidence.

Led by Valerie Fry and Keisha Tucker, every program uses certified, positive reinforcement methods — no e-collars, no prong collars, no corrections.

What Sets Our Team Apart

Giving Your Dog the Tools It Needs

Historic Downtown McKinney is one of the most walkable, dog-friendly squares in the metroplex — which only works well if your dog can settle quietly at an outdoor table and stay calm around unfamiliar people and dogs passing by. We build that kind of public settling and neutral behavior directly into training for clients who want to actually bring their dog along, not leave them home.

McKinney's trail system — Towne Lake, Bonnie Wenk Park, and Erwin Park — is where a lot of local dog owners spend their weekends, and reliable recall and leash composure make all the difference out there. We also see a steady stream of new puppies from families settling into Stonebridge Ranch, Craig Ranch, and other newer McKinney neighborhoods — early habits set in the first few months matter, which is exactly why we start potty training, crate training, and socialization as early as possible.

Valerie holds her KPA CTP, ABCDT-L2, AKC CGC Evaluator, and CLASS certifications. Keisha is also an AKC CGC Evaluator and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), a background that shapes how we support McKinney-area veterans and clients managing PTSD or anxiety through service dog training. Both administer AKC Canine Good Citizen testing directly.

If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would! Entrusting someone with your dog for an entire month is a big decision, but from the very beginning, I knew Samantha Jean was in amazing hands. During her boarding and training, she received exceptional care, and the transformation in her behavior was incredible. She came home more well-mannered, and responsive than I ever imagined. One thing that meant so much to me while Samantha Jean was away was the communication. Valerie and Keisha regularly FaceTimed me and sent videos of her training and daily progress, so I could see firsthand how well she was doing. Those updates gave me so much peace of mind and made being apart from her much easier. What truly sets them apart is their commitment to both the dogs and their owners. Once Samantha Jean’s onsite training was complete, they went above and beyond by picking me up from the airport, taking me to lunch, and spending that time doing one-on-one, face-to-face training with both of us. That hands-on instruction gave me the confidence to continue everything Samantha Jean had learned before they took us back to the airport. Even though we live far away, their support didn’t end when we left. They continue to offer follow-up training through FaceTime and Zoom, making sure we’re successful long after the initial training is over. That level of dedication and ongoing support is rare and shows how much they genuinely care about the dogs they train and the families they serve. If you’re looking for trainers who are knowledgeable, patient, caring, and truly invested in your dog’s long-term success, I cannot recommend Valerie and Keisha with The Service Dog Team Academy highly enough. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of Samantha Jean and for giving us the tools and support to help her continue to thrive. We are forever grateful!

We were very impressed with the care and training Lexi received during our time out of the country. The ladies at The Service Dog Team are very knowledgeable in what they do and have provided our family with lots of tips to help support our little one. Lexi had her first social training session at Home Depot today and loved it. She went right home and fell asleep on the couch without anything in her mouth. She is a tired and happy girl!🩷

This training has been a great experience for both my dog and me. It has helped us build confidence in public settings while teaching us how to better communicate and understand each other. We've both learned new skills, and the guidance has made training more enjoyable and effective. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to strengthen their bond with their dog while improving real-world behavior.

I highly recommend the team, very professional & caring. The best part is their genuine passion for fur babies, it shows in the care and attention they give to every pet. Keep up the good work!

Kimberly has been working really hard on getting her service dog training in as she will be a service/task oriented dog for my wife. The service dog team academy is great. Keisha and Bailey have gone above and beyond to help us and Kimber learn what we need to accomplish this. Here are a few pictures of Kimber learning to not be reactive to her surroundings. The Service Dog Team Academy will answer your questions and help in any way possible. They helped with Kimber by taking her for a month after I broke my ankle and was unable to do anything and my wife couldn't work with her like she needed. They are a great team to have behind you and will support you in every way need we do. I highly recommend them for any training your dog my need. They are great.

Kimber has been working with Service Dog Team Academy on becoming a service dog for me. She is doing great and I'm feeling more confident in working with her thanks to Keisha and Bailey. They are great and always available to help and answer any and all questions. They really devote their time and energy into getting your dog at the level you need. I highly recommend them to anyone needing help with their dog. The pictures are of Kimber working on stay at Lowe's and at the Dr. office working on not being distracted by people.

McKinney Dog Training FAQs

Answers to all your pressing questions about our services, our prices, and what to expect with your dog in one of our training programs.

Can you help my dog behave well at Downtown Square restaurants and shops?

Yes — this is one of the most common requests we get from McKinney clients. Settling quietly at an outdoor table, staying neutral around passing people and dogs, and general public composure are core parts of our training, and especially relevant given how walkable and dog-friendly the Square is.

Do you help with recall and trail manners?

Yes. Reliable recall and loose-leash composure are essential for McKinney’s trail system — Towne Lake, Bonnie Wenk, and Erwin Park all see heavy foot and bike traffic on weekends, and a dog that bolts or won’t come back isn’t safe out there. We build these skills as part of our standard obedience and in-home training.

We just moved into a new McKinney neighborhood with a puppy — where do we start?

Start early. With so many new families in developments like Stonebridge Ranch and Craig Ranch, we see a lot of new puppies right now, and the habits set in the first few months last for years. Our puppy training program covers potty training, crate training, leash skills, and socialization from the start.

Do you train service dogs for McKinney residents?

Yes — service dog training is one of our core specialties. We work with McKinney handlers through the full training pathway: Board & Train foundation, weekly public training sessions, Canine Good Citizen certification, CGC Urban, and task-specific work. Under Texas law, Service Dogs in Training have full public access rights, so training can happen in real McKinney environments early in the process.

What makes The Service Dog Team Academy different from other McKinney trainers?

Both owners are certified AKC CGC Evaluators, meaning we administer official Canine Good Citizen testing directly rather than referring clients elsewhere. Co-owner Keisha Tucker is also a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, which shapes how we support veterans and clients managing PTSD through service dog training. Every program uses positive reinforcement exclusively.

How much does dog training cost in McKinney?

Our pricing is the same for all DFW clients regardless of city. Board & Train is $1,950 with a $200 deposit. In-Home Training runs $150 per session or discounted packages of 3 or 5 sessions. Service dog task training is $1,950 per 12-session package. See our full FAQ page for complete pricing details.
